VIRTUES OF DHUL HIJJAH

VIRTUES OF DHUL HIJJAH
“By the Dawn, and the Ten Nights.” [Al-Fajr]
The Qur’anic Commentators (Mufassirūn) generally agree that the ten nights Allah has sworn by refer to the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah.
The most apparent reason for the ten days of Dhul Hijjah being distinguished in excellence is due to the assembly of the greatest acts of worship in this period, i.e. Prayers, Fasting, Charity and the Hajj (pilgrimage). In no other periods do these great deeds combine." [Fath ul-Bārī]
Sayyidah Hafsah said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not leave four matters: Fasting `Ashura (10th of Muharram), the ten days [of Dhul Hijjah], and three days of each month.” [Nasa'i]
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "There are no days which are more beloved to Allah wherein He should be worshipped than the ten days of Dhul Hijjah. Fasting on each of these days equals to fasting for a full year. Engaging in worship on each of these nights equals to engaging in worship on the night of Power (Laylat ul-Qadr)." [Tirmidhi]
The Scholars have agreed that it is recommended (Mustahab) to fast during the first nine days of Dhul Hijjah. Note, however, the tenth day is the day of Eid ul-Adhā, and is prohibitively disliked and sinful to fast this day. [Fatāwā Hindiyya]
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: There are no days in which good actions are more beloved to Allah than these days – meaning the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah.” The Companions asked, ‘Not even jihad in the path of Allah, O Messenger of Allah?’ He ﷺ said, “Not even jihad in the path of Allah, except for the one who goes forth with his person and wealth and does not return with any of it.” [Bukhari]
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "There are no days greater in the sight of Allah and in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Him than these ten days, so during this time recite a great deal of Tahlīl (Lā ilāha ill-Allāh), Takbīr (Allāhu Akbar) and Tahmīd (Alhamdulillāh)." [Ahmad]
Ibn Umar and Abu Hurayrah would go out to the markets in the ten days saying the takbīr causing the people to follow them in this action." [Bukhari]
It is recommended to exert oneself in good works during the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah, such as remembrance of Allah (dhikr), fasting, charity, and other righteous actions, because they are the best of days. Many scholars even stated that daytimes of these ten days are more virtuous than the daytimes of the last ten days of Ramadān.
Ibn Abbās used to strive profusely when these ten days commenced. He used to say: "Do not put off your lights during these ten nights, Allah loves worship in them." [Latā'if ul-Ma'ārif]
When the days of Dhul Hijjah began Sa'īd bin Jubair would strive to increase in good actions with great intensity until he was unable to increase anymore.[Darimī]
